Major Differences Between Modern and Contemporary Art

People often get confused between the terms ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ forms of art. But in general, these two highly popular art forms refer to two different periods in the History of Art and Culture. When we hear the term ‘modern’, we think of recent times. But modern art is originally associated with Modernism that is spanned between the late 19th and the mid-20th century. On the contrary, contemporary art signifies the artworks that are being made at present by Famous Contemporary Artists in Kolkata

Through this blog, let’s take a closer look at the major differences between these two famous forms of art.

 Emergence:

As we have already specified the timespan of both art forms, it is crystal clear that modern art emerged long before the coming of the contemporary form of art. On the other hand, the term ‘contemporary’ is used to refer to the art of today. This is because the art created in the current days is called the contemporary art form. Contemporary art came into light way later than modern or ‘modernist’ art forms. The beginning of contemporary art has also been called the postmodernist art form by a majority of Famous Contemporary Artists in Kolkata. From around the 1960s onwards, contemporary art started to gain its popularity and common people started admiring contemporary art forms after modern art.

Type:

There is truly no similarity between the types of modernist and contemporary art forms. Modern art is mainly too much diverse to generalize it with other forms and trends or art. You can still get to see modern art at any Private Art Gallery in Kolkata and end up having this view that modern art is mostly too much abstract. Contrarily, the contemporary art form is varied from the modernist art form and it is too much eclectic. Even some Famous Contemporary Artists in Kolkata often opine that the contemporary art form is more complex or complicated than the modernist art form.

To conclude, it can be said that modern art forms experienced more freedom than art forms of today. Modern artists got the opportunity and freedom to explore and represent societal norms and culture through the arts. In opposition, moving to the late 19th century and mid-20th, with the great Industrial Revolution, new concepts and philosophies were added to global art and culture. Contemporary artists nowadays are following the artistic styles and techniques to produce great contemporary art.
